How to Play

Setup, cards, scoring, bonuses

Setup

The Ace through 9 of spades start in the bottom three boxes of the grid, three cards per box and three per row. You can use 1 of 3 starting positions:

  • Default lines them up in a staircase: A-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9.
  • Random uses the same squares but shuffles which spade goes where.
  • Custom lets you drag them anywhere in the bottom three boxes. Limit to 3 cards per row and box (you can stack 3 in a column)

When you're happy, hit Shuffle & Deal.

Playing

  1. The rest of the deck (45 cards, jokers included) is shuffled and you draw one card at a time.
  2. Every card you play has to adhere to sudoku rules (1 digit per row, column, and box) and be placed orthogonally next to another card: directly above, below, left, or right. Wild cards still need to be played orthogonally.
  3. Drag the card onto an open square, or just tap the square you want. With Show possible moves on, legal squares light up green. With Show placement restrictions on, the cards already on the board that block your card are highlighted.
  4. If you can't (or don't want to) place it, discard it.
  5. Undo takes back your last placement or discard, all the way back to the deal.
  6. The game ends when the deck runs out.

The Cards

  • Ace–9 count as 1–9 and follow normal sudoku rules.
  • 10, J, Q, K, Jokers are wilds. Wild sudoku rules apply only to wilds. Meaning they don't block numbers, but two wilds of the same suit or the same rank (two Kings, for example) can't share a row, column, or box.

Scoring

Points come from completing a full row, column, or box (all 9 squares filled). The top of the board is hardest to reach, so it's worth the most. The outside columns get a bonus.

Rows are numbered top to bottom, columns left to right, and boxes left to right, top to bottom. Just like normal sudoku.

# Row Column Box
1 27 27 27
2 27 18 27
3 27 18 27
4 18 18 18
5 18 18 18
6 18 18 18
7 9 18 9
8 9 18 9
9 9 27 9

Bonus Multipliers

A completed row, column, or box can earn additive bonus multipliers:

  • Clean ×2: no wilds or jokers.
  • Flush ×2: all 9 cards are the same suit (wilds included, jokers break it).
  • Straight ×3: Ace through 9 in order, in either direction. Rows read left to right, columns top to bottom, and boxes from top left to bottom right. A Straight is always Clean too, so it's worth at least ×5.
  • Royal ×2: a Straight that's also a Flush. Stacks with everything above, for ×9.

Discards

Every discarded card costs 9 points, so your score can go negative. Choose your scratches wisely.

Achievements

↩️ Earn a game achievement in a game where you never press Undo and it gets a gold border and a No Undo tag. Already have it? Earning it again without Undo upgrades it. Completionist achievements upgrade once all their checks are gold.

Welcome to Cardoku

Sudoku with playing cards.

How to Play?

Fill all 9 squares of a row, column, or box (r/c/b) to score points. Cards are 1 point by default, but you won't get any points unless you complete a r/c/b. Each r/c/b you complete you will earn more or less points.

See the scoring guide below:

Bonuses

There are also placement bonuses depending on the 9 cards in the r/c/b.

Here are those bonuses:

Bonuses are multipliers that can stack. This means a Royal r/c/b gets its default value multiplied by 9. Big score incoming if you can pull that off.

Discarding cards

Sometimes you can't play a card (no legal moves), or you don't want to (interesting strategy). Each card you discard is -9 points.
